First Class Lineman

Location: The Energy Cooperative, Utica Service Center, 11339 Mt. Vernon Road, Utica, OH 43080
Classification: Non-Exempt Status: This position is subject to the overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act, as amended.
Working Hours: Normal Working Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Overtime required including on call work.
 Summary: This position is responsible for safe operation of vehicles and equipment to assist line crews in the construction, maintenance and operation of overhead and underground lines by clearing and maintaining right-of-ways.   Work is performed under general supervision and is checked by observation to ensure compliance with all safety standards and regulations.


Job Duties: Install and maintain circuits and all types of line equipment on different types of construction, energized or de-energized.  Work with hot line equipment on energized circuits for emergency repairs or routine changes.

Operate line switches, locate and repair faults, refuse line and transformer cutouts, change line and transformer taps, and phase out parallel circuits, both overhead and underground.

Patrol and maintain overhead and underground electric distribution lines.

Install and remove street lights and other related equipment.

Complete scheduled tool and truck inspections and exchanges of rubber gloves and cover-up materials.

Perform on-call duty assignments including working after regular working hours and on Saturdays, Sundays, and company-observed holidays and respond quickly to all outage and emergency situations.

Perform other related work in addition to other duties as may be assigned.


 Qualifications Education and/or Experience:  High school diploma.   A minimum of four years as an Apprentice Lineman required or successful completion of an approved Lineman Training Program which includes field training, working knowledge of safety standards and operating procedures, and practical theory in all phases of power line installation and maintenance.  Must be proficient in pole top and bucket rescue techniques.

Certificates, Licenses and/or Training:  Must possess and maintain a valid state of Ohio Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and good driving record.  Must maintain a current first-aid and CPR training card. Ability to attend meetings and/or training seminars when requested.

Language Skills:  Ability to read, interpret and communicate documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Other Skills and Abilities:  Must be familiar with the hazards that exist in the form of falls, electrical shock, electrical flash, falling objects and traffic.  Must be familiar with the use of protective clothing and safety equipment.  Adaptability to accept responsibility for the direction, control, or planning of an activity.  Adaptability to performing under stress, when confronted with emergency, critical, unusual, or dangerous situations; or in situations in which working speed or sustained attention are critical aspects of the job.

While performing this job, an Employee would regularly walk, stand, bend, crouch, kneel, climb, stoop, lift, use hand tools, operate other tools and power equipment and drive a Company truck.   Successful performance requires ability to climb poles, work in elevated locations, maintain sufficient strength to lift heavy objects, and the ability to successfully work in adverse weather conditions.  An Employee in this position is subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing as outlined in the Company’s Drug and Alcohol policy.
